Genitourinary Radiology utilizes x-rays to help diagnose abnormalities of the urinary and gynecological systems. Intravenous (IV) contrast Medium is commonly used to allow for better visualization of genitourinary systems. IV contrast does not permit x-rays to pass through it allowing better visualization of genitourinary structures when viewed through a fluoroscope or seen on an x-ray film.
IV contrast contains iodine so it is important to tell your doctor if you have any allergies to iodine before you are scheduled for these types of studies. If this contrast is required, and you are 50 years of age or older, a certain blood test may be required to make certain your kidneys are functioning well enough to receive it.
